2021 Honda CR-V Reviews Summary

Even in a grim year, Honda is selling a staggering number of CR-Vs. The CR-V is the best-selling Honda by far. It’s also the second best-selling compact SUV, just behind the Toyota RAV4. And it's the fifth best-selling vehicle in the U.S., and if you take out all the commercial sales of full-size pickups it’s one of the two best-selling vehicles year in and year out.

So it’s hard to argue against the CR-V formula. Honda’s been at this almost as long as crossovers have been a thing, launching the CR-V in 1997—a year after the RAV4 debuted.

The funny thing is, aside from sales volume, there’s only one thing the CR-V particularly excels at. Aesthetics are subjective, but it would be hard to argue the CR-V is the best looking vehicle in its class. It’s not the cheapest. It’s not the best equipped, especially at the middle to lower trim levels. It’s not the fastest, nor is it the quietest, or the most fuel efficient. It’s not even the most reliable, showing up nowhere in J.D. Power's Most Reliable list.

So what makes it so appealing to American consumers? Let’s see if we can figure that out.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

Look and feel

2021 Honda CR-V

6/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 Honda CR-V was often noted for its conventional appearance, blending seamlessly with the myriad of compact crossovers on the market. Its design was characterized by a uniformity that made it difficult to distinguish from its competitors, with only minor details like the grille and chromed plastic features setting it apart. The color palette offered by Honda was somewhat limited, with a predominance of neutral tones and only a few vibrant options available on higher trims. Inside, the CR-V provided a modern look with angular seat designs and a choice of cloth or leather upholstery, depending on the trim level. However, competitors like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson offered more distinctive styling, especially in mid-tier trims.

In contrast, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover presented an evolutionary design that maintained the brand's signature look while introducing subtle updates. The most notable change was at the rear, where thin LED strips replaced the previous square taillights, enhancing the vehicle's modern appeal. The Range Rover emphasized its size and presence, particularly in the long-wheelbase version, which added eight inches to its length. Inside, the Range Rover's cabin was simplified with fewer buttons and a larger touchscreen, offering a more contemporary feel. The use of premium materials, such as leather and rich wood trim, contributed to a luxurious atmosphere, making it a standout in its class.

Performance

2021 Honda CR-V

6/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

The 2021 Honda CR-V was equipped with a 190-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine across all trims, excluding the hybrid versions. It delivered smooth and steady acceleration, reaching 60 mph in approximately 7.8 seconds. While not designed for high-performance driving, the CR-V provided predictable handling and a comfortable ride, thanks to its MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) offered a consistent driving experience, though it lacked the engagement found in competitors with conventional transmissions. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered two powertrain options: the base P400 with a 395-horsepower turbocharged inline-six and a more powerful P530 with a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V8. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The P400 accelerated to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, providing impressive performance for a vehicle of its size. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile, with well-managed body roll and standard rear-wheel steering enhancing maneuverability. Off-road capability was a hallmark of the Range Rover, with the Terrain Response system optimizing traction for various conditions. The ride quality was exceptionally smooth, making it one of the most comfortable luxury SUVs available.

Form and function

The 2021 Honda CR-V prioritized functionality, offering 102.9 cubic feet of passenger volume and 75.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The cargo area was accessible via a manual tailgate on lower trims, with power and hands-free options available on higher trims. Roof rails were standard only on the top Touring trim, limiting options for carrying additional gear. The CR-V's interior was designed to accommodate five passengers comfortably, with a focus on practicality and ease of use.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover excelled in interior space, with ample room in the first two rows and a sense of openness enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats offered massage functions, and storage options were plentiful, including dual glove boxes and a large center console. The second row provided generous space for taller passengers, with power adjustments and additional tech features. An optional third row was available, though it was best suited for smaller passengers. Cargo space varied from 17.1 cubic feet behind the third row to 93 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable air suspension facilitated loading and unloading.

The 2021 Honda CR-V featured a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all trims except the base LX, which had a basic 5-inch screen. Higher trims offered enhanced audio systems, with the Touring trim providing a 300-watt system with a subwoofer. Charging ports were abundant, with USB and 12-volt outlets available throughout the cabin. The Touring trim also included a wireless phone charger and satellite navigation.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover boasted a 13-inch touchscreen with the new Pivi Pro infotainment system, offering sharp graphics and quick responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, complemented by a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system delivered impressive sound quality, with an optional 35-speaker upgrade available. Additional tech features included Amazon Alexa integration, remote automated parking, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, enhancing the Range Rover's luxury appeal.

Safety

The 2021 Honda CR-V excelled in safety, earning a five-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick award. The Honda Sensing system, standard across all trims, included features like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. The only feature not standard on the base LX trim was blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover came equipped with standard safety features such as frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system. While crash test results were not available, the Range Rover's safety features performed well during testing. However, some advanced features offered by competitors were not included, leaving room for future enhancements.
