2021 Jeep Cherokee Reviews SummaryThe KL-generation Cherokee launched as a 2014 model and almost immediately began swirling in controversy. Jeep hadn’t offered a Cherokee in the United States since the 2001 model year, when the XJ Cherokee disappeared, replaced by two generations of the Jeep Liberty. There was great excitement for this all-new Jeep. Lots of fans were hoping for a redo of the 1984 to 2001 Jeep Cherokee that really helped to define the midsize SUV class with a unibody and legendary toughness. “The 2014 Cherokee feels planted on the road, more carlike than trucklike…” read an early review in Car and Driver. A separate review from the same publication read: “If you have eyes, you’ve noticed that this Cherokee, code-named KL, makes no design references, other than with the grille, to the iconic, rectilinear XJ Cherokee.” But the automotive industry isn’t necessarily in the business of fueling nostalgia. It’s interested in what it can sell in great numbers in the future, not what people liked 30 years ago. And what we’ve realized over the years is that the Cherokee is really good at what it does, and it’s capable of doing a lot more than you’d expect. Jeep sells these at a rate of 240,000 annually, in a good year. The best the Jeep Liberty it replaced ever managed was 166,883 units before dropping off the face of the Earth entirely. Clearly, Jeep knew something we didn’t when it released the Cherokee.
2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews SummaryThe iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's styling had evolved since its debut, with opinions softening over time. Initially, the short grille and swept-back headlights were contentious, but familiarity improved its perceived proportions. The exterior's appeal varied by trim level, with the entry-level Latitude appearing generic, while the 80th Anniversary Edition boasted a more refined look with 19-inch wheels and painted cladding. The Cherokee's panoramic sunroof was a standout feature, enhancing its distinctiveness in a crowded SUV market. Its resemblance to the larger Grand Cherokee, especially from the front, helped it stand out.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover underwent a subtle evolution rather than a complete redesign. Its front and sides retained the broad, rounded look of its predecessor, with a new vertical accent strip under the mirrors. The rear saw the most significant change, with thin LED strips replacing square taillights. The Range Rover emphasized its size, especially in the long-wheelbase version. Inside, the cabin was simplified with fewer buttons, a larger touchscreen, and premium materials like leather and wood trim. The interior exuded luxury, with a solid feel and a refined atmosphere that rivaled high-end competitors.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee offered three engine options. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder produced 180 horsepower, while the 3.2-liter V-6 delivered 271 hp. The top-tier 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generated 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Despite these options, acceleration was modest, with the V6 achieving 0-60 mph in about 7.2 seconds. All models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission, praised for its fuel efficiency. The Trailhawk model excelled off-road, thanks to features like Jeep Active Drive Lock and Selec-Speed Crawl Control. However, the availability of front-wheel drive aimed to keep prices competitive.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered two powertrains. The base P400 featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with a mild hybrid system, producing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. The P530 upgraded to a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both engines paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD. The P400 achieved 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds, impressive for its size. The Range Rover handled well for a large SUV, with rear-wheel steering aiding maneuverability. Off-road capabilities remained strong, supported by the Terrain Response system.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee occupied a niche between the Renegade and Grand Cherokee. It offered 26 cubic feet of cargo space with seats up and 55 cubic feet with seats folded, lagging behind competitors. Passenger volume was 102 cubic feet, competitive within its class. The interior was simple and functional, with trim levels affecting material quality. The Latitude featured basic materials, while the Trailhawk and Latitude Lux offered more upscale options like suede and Nappa leather.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover provided ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats offered massage functions, and storage options were plentiful. The second row accommodated taller passengers with power adjustments and additional tech features. The optional third row was less spacious but suitable for smaller passengers. Cargo space was 17.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 93 cubic feet with seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable air suspension facilitated loading.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee featured the Uconnect infotainment system with 7-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreens, praised for ease of use. It supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though not wirelessly. A 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration were available, along with remote start. The system was consistent across Stellantis brands, offering familiarity to users.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover introduced the Pivi Pro infotainment system with a 13-inch touchscreen. It offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired with a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system provided excellent sound quality, with an optional 35-speaker upgrade. Additional tech included Amazon Alexa, remote parking, and a smartphone app for remote control.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee received "Good" scores in crashworthiness from the IIHS but lacked a Top Safety Pick award. The NHTSA gave it a four-star overall rating. Standard safety features included lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control was limited to higher trims.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover lacked crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS. Standard safety features included frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system. While adequately equipped, some rivals offered additional advanced features.
