2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s body-on-frame SUVs appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road, and do either in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favor for anyone not enamored by a V8 growl.

Look and feel

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover underwent a subtle evolution rather than a radical redesign. Its front and side profiles closely resembled the previous generation, with a broad, rounded face and large, unadorned sheet metal. A vertical accent strip under the mirrors distinguished the new model from its predecessor. The rear view saw the most significant change, with thin LED strips replacing the old square taillights, integrated into a darker trim element. The interior was simplified, featuring a larger tablet-like touchscreen and fewer buttons, while maintaining a familiar design. Premium leather and rich wood trim elements enhanced the luxurious feel, and the cabin exuded a solid, creak-free quality, even on rough roads.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX boasted a commanding presence with its massive spindle grille and 8.1 inches of ground clearance. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned with limited availability and exclusive paint colors. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's interior featured a disappointing amount of plastic, though it offered heated and cooled front seats, a power-retracting steering wheel, and impressive leather upholstery. The GX's design leaned sleeker compared to Toyota's blocky designs, and its hood fell away from sight, making it easier to navigate technical driving. However, the GX's research and design budget had long been spent, and it relied on easy manufacturing to maintain its luxury price premium.

Performance

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Range Rover offered two powertrains: the base P400 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, and the P530 with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The P400 provided effortless acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, while the V8 offered more power for those seeking it. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile, with well-managed body roll and standard rear-wheel-steering for sharper turns. Its off-road capability was impressive, aided by the Terrain Response system, and the ride quality was smooth and quiet.

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. While it didn't excel on paper compared to newer engines, the GX's V8 provided a satisfying sound and linear power delivery. Its 6,500-pound towing capacity was respectable, but the GX's fuel economy was less appealing, with an EPA estimate of 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined. The GX's weight affected its handling, but its roll was predictable and controllable. The Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential and standard four-wheel drive system enhanced its off-road capability, making it user-friendly in challenging conditions.

Form and function

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Range Rover offered ample space in the first two rows, with excellent outward visibility and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats were cushioned for long-distance comfort, with available massage functions. Storage options included two glove boxes, a wireless charging pad, and a large center console bin. The second row provided power recline and sliding adjustments, along with climate controls and USB-C ports. The optional third row was accessible with a button, though headroom was limited for adults. Cargo space was 17.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 93 cubic feet with all seats folded. The split tailgate and air suspension height adjustment aided loading.

The 2023 Lexus GX retained cubby space for small items, with a deep center console bin and conveniently placed cupholders. The GX featured hard buttons for controls, avoiding the trend of haptic-touch interfaces. The second row offered comfortable seating, with captain's chairs or a three-across bench seat. The third row was tight for regular use, suitable for emergencies. The side-hinged trunk door required effort to open, and cargo space was limited to 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded.

Technology

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Range Rover featured a 13-inch touchscreen with the new Pivi Pro infotainment system, offering sharper graphics and quicker responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system delivered impressive sound quality, with an optional 35-speaker upgrade. Additional tech features included Amazon Alexa integration, remote automated parking, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and remote control via a smartphone app.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already appeared dated. The 10.3-inch touchscreen offered Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface was present but unnecessary due to the improved touchscreen. The GX included three years of Lexus Enform Remote and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson stereo. However, the touchscreen lagged, and graphics were less crisp compared to newer Lexus models. The GX excelled in off-road capability, with a real 4WD system, downhill assist, hill-start assist, and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System.

Safety

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Range Rover lacked crash test results from NHTSA and IIHS, but it came standard with advanced safety features, including frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and a surround-view camera system. The surround-view cameras were particularly helpful for off-roading. While adequately equipped, some rivals offered additional safety features.

The 2023 Lexus GX also lacked crash test results, but it included advanced driver assistance systems such as automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. Despite its older design, the GX's safety features were up-to-date.
