Reviews Summary

The mid-size SUV has room for seven (barely) and comes in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trims. There are two different engine choices, but all Q7s, regardless of trim, are all-wheel-drive (AWD) with excellent handling characteristics. However, this second-generation Q7 has been around since 2017, and it shows in some key areas.

Verdict: While the 2025 Audi Q7 has a lot going for it in terms of driving dynamics and engine prowess, it falls behind the competition when it comes to safety tech. Further, the third row is cramped for anyone but the smallest of humans, and the price can skyrocket as you move up the trim line.

Reviews Summary

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas continues as VW’s American-market three-row SUV (a two-row Atlas Cross Sport is also available, but we’ll cover that separately), largely unchanged from its substantial 2024 refresh. For 2026, Volkswagen adds a factory-installed HomeLink rearview mirror to all but the base Atlas SE trim level–hardly groundbreaking stuff. What remains, however, is a vehicle that impresses with its upscale appearance and a genuinely spacious interior. A stiff ride and poorly executed technology will fight and frustrate you every step of the way, but the Atlas will nonetheless make you look good.

Verdict: The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas delivers on its core promise of style and space at a non-luxury price point. If you can tolerate its subpar ride quality and maddening infotainment system—or if you simply plan to rely on Apple CarPlay and ignore the native tech—this handsome three-row SUV offers compelling value for shoppers prioritizing looks and space.

Look and feel

2025 Audi Q7

8/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

The 2025 Audi Q7 showcased a refined exterior with a new front fascia, featuring standard Matrix-design LED headlamps and stylish daytime running lights. The front spoiler and rear diffuser were updated, and the grille sported vertical inlays within its octagon frame, contributing to a more cohesive look. Customization options allowed buyers to choose different finishes for the front bumper, door trim, and rear diffuser, with the Black Optic package adding black accents and blacked-out chrome exhaust tips. The laser-etched badging on the B-pillar was a unique touch, and the Q7 was available in eight colors, including the new Sakhir Gold. Inside, the updates were minimal, with new wood and carbon trim inlays but limited interior color options. The interior featured stacked infotainment screens and extensive HVAC vents, though the piano black surfaces were prone to fingerprints.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas, particularly in the SEL Premium R-Line trim, exuded a sense of luxury with its full-LED lighting, power-adjustable heated side mirrors, and sculpted silhouette. The Peak Edition added unique bumpers, rugged side sills, and blackout trim pieces, while the SEL Premium R-Line boasted power-folding side mirrors with puddle lights and 21-inch two-tone alloy wheels. The Pure Gray paint resisted dirt, and the Titan Black upholstery with silver underlay provided a clean look. The Atlas appeared more expensive than its price suggested, with the SEL Premium R-Line starting at $56,105. Inside, quilted diamond-pattern leather seats, metallic accents, and artificial wood trim created a warm environment, though the MIB3 infotainment system was frustrating to use. The Atlas offered competitive space across all three rows, with a focus on comfort and practicality.

Performance

2025 Audi Q7

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

5/10

The 2025 Audi Q7 offered two engine options for the Premium and Premium Plus trims: a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine producing 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.0-liter turbo V6 with 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. The top Prestige trim, equipped with the larger engine, delivered smooth power delivery through an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the Q7 handled well, with minimal body roll and firm brakes, the steering and transmission response in Dynamic mode left room for improvement. The Q7's fuel economy was rated at 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined for the 55 TFSI engine, slightly less efficient than some competitors.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine producing 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard on lower trims, while all-wheel drive was available on all trims and standard on the Peak Edition and above. The Atlas's engine, a refined iteration of Volkswagen's EA888 powerplant, offered a wide and usable powerband, though initial acceleration felt adequate rather than eager. The Atlas achieved a zero-to-60 mph time of 8.3 seconds for the AWD model. The Drive Mode Select system provided various driving options, and the Atlas recorded 22 mpg during testing, slightly better than the EPA's 21 mpg combined estimate. The 4Motion AWD system performed well in rain and light snow, but the ride quality suffered due to the large wheels on the SEL Premium R-Line trim.

Form and function

2025 Audi Q7

8/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

The 2025 Audi Q7 featured heated eight-way power-adjustable front seats with four-way lumbar support, with the Prestige trim adding a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, 360-degree camera, and ventilated and massaging front seats. The Q7's third row was best suited for children, with limited legroom for adults. Cargo space measured 14.2 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 35.7 and 69.6 cubic feet when the third and second rows were folded, respectively. Small storage spaces were limited, with a shallow center console and door pockets.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in accommodating passengers and cargo, with heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats in the SEL Premium R-Line trim. The driver's seat offered 10-way power adjustment, while the passenger's seat was manually adjusted on lower trims. The second row featured captain's chairs that folded flat and tipped forward for easy access to the third row. The third row provided decent leg support, and cargo capacity was a strong point, with 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 55.5 and 96.6 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Atlas offered competitive space across all three rows, making it a practical choice for families.

Technology

2025 Audi Q7

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

4/10

The 2025 Audi Q7's Multi Media Interface (MMI) infotainment system featured a 10.1-inch center screen and a smaller screen for HVAC controls, along with a configurable digital gauge cluster. The menu structure was user-friendly, but the screen required a firm push, and the system could be sluggish. The Q7 offered Google Maps as its native navigation system, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Audi App Store allowed downloads of third-party programs, and the myAudi app offered customization options for the MMI system.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas came standard with a 12-inch touchscreen running the MIB3 operating system, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charging. The SEL Premium R-Line trim added a Harman Kardon audio system, head-up display, and surround-view camera system. While the interface looked sharp, the MIB3 system was frustrating to use, with touch-sensitive slider controls that were invisible at night. The voice control system was unreliable, making Apple CarPlay or Android Auto the preferred options. The Harman Kardon audio system delivered excellent sound quality, and the Digital Cockpit Pro offered multiple view options.

Safety

2025 Audi Q7

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

8/10

The 2025 Audi Q7 was equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The Q7 could park itself, but the lane-centering system was less robust than competitors. The NHTSA awarded the Q7 a five-star overall rating, with four stars for front crash and rollover. The IIHS had not yet rated the 2025 model, but the 2024 model received top marks in crashworthiness.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas earned a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with five stars in side-crash testing. The IIHS named the 2025 Atlas a Top Safety Pick+. Volkswagen's IQ.Drive suite of driver assistance features was standard across all trims, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. The systems performed reliably during testing, and the SEL Premium R-Line trim added Park Assist.
