Reviews Summary

In its 14th generation and two years after a modest refresh, the 2026 Ford F-150 reshuffles standard and optional equipment across its eight trims, three beds, three cabs, and six powertrains. The electric F-150 Lightning ended production after the 2025 model year, leaving with it the potential for a plug-in hybrid in a future generation. For this test, we grabbed a low-level trim—the STX Lobo—to see how the F-150 fares with a traditional V8 and fewer features.

Verdict: The F-150 is the full-size truck with the most versatility and configurations on the market today.

Reviews Summary

The Ford Maverick really shook up the pickup-truck market when it arrived as a 2022 model. Ford’s compact pickup utilizes the same basic platform as the Escape and Bronco Sport crossovers, but offers real truck capability and a hybrid powertrain to boot. The 2025 model features styling and tech updates, but the biggest news is a Maverick Lobo performance variant and an all-wheel drive (AWD) hybrid, so that’s what we focused on for this first drive.

Verdict: The Maverick is still a great vehicle, but it’s not quite the bargain it once was.

Look and feel

2026 Ford F-150

9/10

2025 Ford Maverick

5/10

The 2025 Ford Maverick presented a fresh yet familiar design, maintaining its chunky styling and large wheel arches reminiscent of larger Ford trucks. The removal of the cross bar that previously bisected the headlights gave it a more conventional look, opening up the grille with various designs depending on the trim level. The Maverick offered several trims, including the base XL, XLT, and Lariat, along with specialty models like the Tremor and Lobo. The Tremor was an off-road model with dedicated suspension tuning and all-terrain tires, while the Lobo paid tribute to the street truck trend with a cleaner front fascia and lowered suspension. The Maverick's interior was praised for its fun design and high-quality feel, even with basic materials, offering neat details like multicolor trim and exposed screwheads.

The 2026 Ford F-150 boasted nine grille styles, each distinct to its trim levels, from the blackened Ford logo on the STX Lobo to the thick chrome on the Lariat and King Ranch. The Raptor featured amber lights and three dashed clearance lights due to its width. Wheel sizes ranged from 17 to 22 inches, with paint choices limited to fewer than a dozen colors. The interior offered marginal color options, with the King Ranch's rich tan leather and the Platinum's dark tan being the only standouts. The interior design was sharp, with integrated screens and chunky analog controls, but material quality lagged behind competitors like the GMC Sierra 1500 and Ram 1500.

Performance

2026 Ford F-150

9/10

2025 Ford Maverick

7/10

The 2025 Ford Maverick retained its two powertrain options, with notable changes to drivetrain configurations. The standard hybrid powertrain, producing 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque, was available with FWD or AWD. The non-hybrid powertrain, a 2.0-liter Ecoboost turbocharged engine with 238 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, was AWD-only. The Maverick Lobo featured a unique seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, lowered suspension, and dual-piston front brake calipers, emphasizing handling over off-road capability. The Lobo's performance was impressive on winding roads, offering a fun and satisfying drive despite a slightly stiffer ride. The basic Maverick hybrid provided a passenger-car-like ride, making it a great daily driver, though power was modest.

The 2026 Ford F-150 excelled in towing, with a maximum capacity of 13,500 pounds or 2,440 pounds of payload, depending on configuration. The base 2.7-liter turbo V6 engine delivered 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, while the 5.0-liter "Coyote" V8 offered 400 hp and 410 lb-ft. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, standard on higher trims, was the best all-rounder with 400 hp and 500 lb-ft. The PowerBoost hybrid, with 430 hp and 570 lb-ft, was not recommended due to its clunky gas-to-electric transition. The Raptors, with their racing suspensions and powerful engines, were built for off-road adventures. The F-150's ride quality was good but not great, with the Raptors providing a smoother experience.

Form and function

2025 Ford Maverick

The 2025 Ford Maverick had a base towing capacity of 2,000 pounds, upgradable to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Towing Package. The hybrid models offered a payload capacity of 1,400 pounds with AWD and 1,500 pounds with FWD. The Maverick's 4.5-foot bed featured innovative cargo solutions, including molded pockets for cargo dividers and a tailgate that could lock at an angle for additional cargo space. Inside, the Maverick offered clever storage solutions, such as intricately molded in-door cubbies and mounting points for 3D-printed accessories. The unibody platform provided similar headroom and legroom to the larger Ford Ranger.

The 2026 Ford F-150 offered three cab and bed sizes, with the Regular cab restricted to the XL base model. The SuperCrew, available on all trims, provided ample space with four full-size doors. The Pro Access Tailgate, a unique feature, allowed for versatile bed access. The hybrid's Pro Power Onboard system offered up to 7,200 watts of power, while regular models provided 2,400 watts. The F-150's interior featured a clever front-row work surface and Zone Lighting for enhanced functionality. However, basic features were absent from lower trims, highlighting the disparity in amenities across the lineup.

Technology

2025 Ford Maverick

7/10

The 2025 Ford Maverick upgraded its tech with the Sync 4 system and a standard 13.2-inch touchscreen, replacing the previous eight-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard, along with an eight-inch digital instrument cluster. The Maverick borrowed towing tech from larger Ford trucks, including Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, enhancing its towing capabilities. However, the reliance on touchscreen controls for temperature and seat heaters was a drawback.

The 2026 Ford F-150 featured a 12-inch touchscreen with Sync 4 software and an analog instrument panel with a 4-inch display. BlueCruise, offering hands-free driving, was optional on select trims. Upper trims boasted Bang & Olufsen stereos, massaging front seats, and a full digital instrument panel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, with a one-time subscription bundle for data and Wi-Fi. The F-150's tech offerings were comprehensive, though not as advanced as competitors like the GMC Sierra 1500.

Safety

2025 Ford Maverick

The 2025 Ford Maverick offered standard safety features like forward-collision warning and blind-spot monitoring on the base XL, with additional features available on higher trims. The NHTSA awarded it a four-star overall safety rating, with five stars in frontal and side crash tests. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in the updated side crash test but a "Marginal" rating in the moderate overlap front test.

The 2026 Ford F-150 came standard with high-beam assist, blind-spot monitors, and forward automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control and BlueCruise were optional. The IIHS rated it "Good" in small overlap and side crash tests but "Poor" in the front moderate overlap test. The NHTSA awarded it a five-star overall safety rating.
