We shopped a lot for a mid sized SUV before buying the Volvo. Rented Kia, Nissan, and Mercedes for trips and for a week in town. Borrowed an Audi Q5 for a while. Test drove a Lexus. The Japanese cars felt and looked cheap except the Lexus and all of them had sloppy handling and brakes compared to the Europeans. The Audi and Mercedes had nicer fit and finish than the Japanese and better handing, but ergonomic problems that we felt would always be irritating. The Volvo has attractive styling inside and out. Ergonomics are very good. Fit, finish, and materials are on par with the other high end Europeans, but price is considerably lower. Handling is good for an SUV. Ride is quite and comfortable. Safety rating is excellent. Our XC-60 is the base model with a few options, but offers pretty much everything we wanted. The only change I have made to it was the addition of an aftermarket rear sway bar. That improved the handling without any negative effects on ride comfort. Would consider larger factory wheels with lower profile tires for even more precise steering.

Compared Kia, Subaru, Audi, and MB before buying the Volvo. CX60 had the best combination of quality, price, and performance of any we saw. Zero maintenance costs have been nice and there has been no reason to take it back for anything other than routine service. Handling, braking, and acceleration are more than adequate. Interior and exterior are attractive design, material quality is excellent, and workmanship is at least as good as any other, better than most. Very comfortable and feels safe under pretty much all conditions.
