CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 613 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,876.00, 29.5% of 2014 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Toyota 4Runner 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
63.9% of 2014 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it remains a traditional body-on-frame SUV in a market that has largely moved toward car-based crossovers. That gives it a rare blend of ruggedness and everyday usability, with the ability to handle mountain roads and freeway driving with equal confidence. It is described as a vehicle that combines comfortable daily driving with true off-road capability, making it appealing to buyers who want an SUV that still feels genuinely truck-like.
Its character is also defined by balance rather than extremity. The 4Runner is presented as less extreme than the Jeep Wrangler or Toyota’s own FJ, while still preserving the kind of capability that crossover shoppers may miss. That makes it distinctive for drivers who want durability and off-road strength without giving up all-road comfort.

Great vehicle overall. Very solid drivetrain. I wouldn’t compare it to much. I own a 2006 with 320k and running strong.

I love this car, i've just decided i need something a little smaller for my family. We had plenty of space on our family vacation and got great gas mileage on the highway (24MPG). Only thing i wish it had was a power lift gate.

It’s a comfortable vehicle. I like all the features it comes with. It rides smoothly. I’m so happy with the heated seats. I don’t care for the moonroof but it wasn’t a feature that made me not want to buy this model.

| Year-Round High | $21,655.05 |

There are 612 listings available, which suggests you have some room to compare options across the market.
If you find a listing below $19,588.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
The 4Runner’s body-on-frame construction and traditional SUV layout make it a strong fit if you want durability, cargo space, and real off-road capability. Its high seating position and practical cabin layout also support everyday use, even if the interior design is more functional than flashy.
32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you can still find attractive examples if you shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 4Runner’s traditional construction and rugged design point to the kind of durability many used buyers want in a truck-based SUV. Its powertrain is straightforward rather than cutting-edge, which can be a plus when you’re looking for a proven setup instead of complexity.
The model’s value-focused ownership story also helps, since it’s built to appeal to buyers who plan to keep it for the long haul. For used shoppers, the main risk is buying a hard-used example without confirming how it was maintained and driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?
At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road use. Focus on signs of wear that match the vehicle’s intended life, including suspension condition, braking feel, and evidence of hard use. If you’re considering a higher-mileage example, pay close attention to how well the cabin, drivetrain, and underbody have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, a multi-information display, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and standard Bluetooth hands-free phone operation. The Trail adds off-road crawl control, increased ground clearance, and rugged visual enhancements, while the Limited adds 20-inch wheels, luxury-inspired front body work, front and rear parking sensors, and dual-zone climate control.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is available on the SR5, 4-wheel drive is available on the SR5 and standard on the Trail, and the Limited uses full-time 4-wheel drive with Active Traction Control.
- Safety package: Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system come standard.
- Infotainment: A 6.1-inch touchscreen is optional on the Trail and standard on the Trail Premium sub-trim. It adds iPod/aux connectivity, HD radio, an integrated backup camera, and the Entune App Suite on the Trail Premium.
- Fuel efficiency: The SR5 rear-wheel-drive model returns 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, while 4-wheel-drive versions return 17 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
Which 2014 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Trail, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is the starting point, but it lacks the Trail’s off-road crawl control and raised ground clearance, as well as the Limited’s parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and more upscale equipment.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Trail is the best fit if you want the 4Runner’s core off-road character, since it adds crawl control and more rugged hardware without moving all the way to the luxury-focused Limited.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most road-friendly choice, with 20-inch wheels, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and a smoother, more upscale feel for daily driving.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 612 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,588.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $20,800 sits slightly below last year's $21,648.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, the softer trend means you should be realistic about timing and condition if you want to maximize return. Well-kept examples should still benefit from the model’s reputation and steady demand among buyers who want a rugged SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The 4Runner comes standard with Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
That standard equipment gives you a solid baseline, but the truck-based design and higher center of gravity mean you should still pay close attention to how the vehicle has been driven and maintained. If you’re comparing trims, make sure the features you want are actually included, since some convenience and tech items are reserved for higher versions.

- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines body-on-frame durability with real off-road capability and everyday usability.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $21,807, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $20,800 average.
- It adds a stronger emphasis on hard-core off-road use and more cargo-focused utility.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and inventory is available. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer example, the 2015 is the better path for buyers who prioritize off-road focus over price.
