Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 a good car?

Owners consistently praise its luxurious comfort, great safety features, and intuitive technology. They also like the smooth driving experience and the visually appealing design.

Volvo’s ownership experience also includes maintenance reminders through its connected app, which can help you stay on top of routine service. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior maintenance was kept up, especially on a premium vehicle with more complex systems.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can confirm the condition of the suspension, electronics, and interior features. Focus on whether the vehicle has been maintained consistently and whether any warning lights, unusual noises, or ride-quality issues show up during a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans T5, T6, T8, and T8 Polestar Engineered versions, with the base T5 FWD Momentum starting the range and higher trims adding more equipment and performance. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more if you care about upscale features and stronger power.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic, with T5 models offering FWD or AWD, T6 models using AWD only, and T8 models adding an electric motor for plug-in hybrid driving. Efficiency ranges from 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway/25 mpg combined on the T5 FWD to 27 mpg combined for the T8 PHEV and 57 MPGe combined in electric-only mode.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, and a rear park assist camera. Pilot Assist is available, and the standard safety suite is especially strong even before you move up the trim ladder.
• Infotainment: The XC60 uses Volvo’s Sensus system with a 9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot. It also supports Volvo’s On Call app, but the interface has a learning curve and nested functions can be distracting while driving.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA figures range from 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway/25 mpg combined on the T5 FWD to 27 mpg combined for the T8 PHEV and 57 MPGe combined in electric-only mode.

Which 2021 Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 is offered in 8 trim levels: T5 FWD Momentum, T5 AWD Momentum, T5 R-Design, T5 Inscription, T6 AWD Momentum, T6 AWD R-Design, T6 AWD Inscription, T8 eAWD Inscription, T8 eAWD R-Design, and T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered.

Here's the short version:

• T5 FWD Momentum: This is the entry point, and it makes the XC60’s core luxury, safety, and style accessible at the lowest price. It’s the best fit if you want the XC60 experience without paying for extra power or premium trim upgrades.
• T5 AWD Momentum: This adds all-wheel drive for more traction while staying close to the base trim’s value proposition. It makes sense if you want the most affordable AWD version.
• T5 R-Design: This trim leans into a sportier appearance and a more upscale feel than the Momentum models. It suits you if style matters as much as value.
• T5 Inscription: This is the more luxury-focused T5 choice, aimed at buyers who want a richer cabin and a more premium presentation. It’s the right pick if comfort and elegance matter more than saving money.
• T6 AWD Momentum: This is the first step up in power, with the stronger turbo-and-supercharged setup and standard AWD. It’s a good fit if you want more performance without jumping all the way to the plug-in hybrid models.
• T6 AWD R-Design: This combines the stronger T6 powertrain with a sportier trim character. Choose it if you want the extra punch and a more expressive look.
• T6 AWD Inscription: This is the most upscale non-hybrid T6 choice, pairing stronger performance with a more premium cabin focus. It suits buyers who want refinement and power together.
• T8 eAWD Inscription: This plug-in hybrid adds electric driving capability and strong combined output, making it the efficiency-minded premium choice. It’s the best-value T8 if you want electrified performance without paying for the top performance trim.
• T8 eAWD R-Design: This is the sportier plug-in hybrid option, combining electric capability with a more aggressive presentation. It fits you if you want the T8 powertrain and a more athletic look.
• T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered: This is the most potent and most expensive version, with the highest output in the lineup. It’s for you if performance is the priority and you want the top-spec XC60.

The standard safety package is already extensive, and Pilot Assist is available if you want more driver-assistance capability.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you have room to shop selectively without waiting for a dramatic bargain.

• Deal availability: 36.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 768 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.25% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 84.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,171, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC60's resale value?

The current average of $24,171 sits slightly below last year's $27,546.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle was maintained.

Because the XC60 still has strong appeal as a premium, safety-focused crossover, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the XC60 T5/T5 AWD and XC60 T6 AWD received five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, low- and high-speed collision mitigation, vehicle/cyclist/large animal detection, driver alert control, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, oncoming mitigation, front, side, and curtain airbags with a driver-side knee airbag, whiplash protection for the front seats, rear park assist camera, and power child locks.

Pilot Assist is available if you want a hands-on semi-autonomous system that combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. The main caveat is that the strongest crash-test language applies to the XC60 overall and to the T5/T5 AWD and T6 AWD variants specifically, so you should confirm the exact trim when comparing listings.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC60 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines luxury-level appointments, exceptional safety features, and a lusty powertrain.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $27,378, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $24,171 average.
• It adds new mild-hybrid powertrains and an Android-based infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for newer tech and updated powertrains, the 2022 is the better alternative.
