The 2022 Volvo S90 is the flagship sedan for the Swedish automaker, highlighting the best of the brand’s luxury and style. The S90 was introduced for the 2017 model year and received a modest refresh for 2021. It carries over into 2022 with some minor powertrain changes and a new Google-based infotainment system.

The S90 has spacious seating for five and a trunk that provides up to 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s not a lot among mid-to-large luxury sedans, but that space can be expanded thanks to power split-folding rear seats.

The 2022 Volvo S90 is available in three trims: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. Standard features on the Momentum include leather upholstery, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a center-console-mounted dial-start that’s unique to Volvo vehicles. Other standard features include a 12-inch digital instrument panel, wireless device charging, a panoramic moonroof, and a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It has a portrait layout and features Google Built-In, replacing the Sensus infotainment system. It does lose Apple CarPlay integration, but this is expected to be added in the future via an over-the-air update.

Moving up to the R-Design adds unique, sporty exterior details, a sport steering wheel, sport bucket front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, quad-zone climate control, and a Harman Kardon premium stereo.

The range-topping Inscription includes many of the same features as the R-Design does, but it also goes for unique luxury touches such as additional chrome accents, walnut cabin inserts, heated and ventilated front seats, and a crystal shift knob.

In past years, there were three powertrain choices for the S90, but for 2022, Volvo simplifies it down to just two. The B6 is the entry-level powertrain and combines a twin-charged (supercharged and turbocharged) four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. It makes a combined 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The S90 is also available with the Recharge T8 powertrain. As the name suggests, it’s a plug-in hybrid, based around the same twin-charged engine, but with dual electric motors and a larger battery pack. The T8 makes 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. Both setups route power through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The B6 returns fuel economy of 23 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined. The EPA measures plug-in vehicles in terms of miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe). In this context, the S90 T8 returns an estimated 63 MPGe. When its 21 miles of electric range are exhausted, the T8 returns 30 combined mpg.

Base MSRP for the 2022 Volvo S90 is $52,850 for a Momentum trim. The R-Design starts at $55,950, and the range-topping Inscription trim also starts at $55,950. The Volvo S90 is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
