Ram is known more for its trucks than for its vans, but the automaker offers two, the larger of which is called the ProMaster.

What’s New for the 2023 Ram ProMaster

The Ram ProMaster got a facelift for 2023 with a new front-end design, an updated grille, and a new bumper. The van is available with an extra-high roof, and Ram offers an automated parking system. There’s also a new roll-up rear door option.

Design

The Ram ProMaster is one of the more awkwardly styled full-size vans in the US, bringing an upright European shape that makes it look more like a wedge than a utility vehicle. The new grille more closely aligns with Ram’s truck styling, and there’s enough black plastic body cladding to sink a ship. Ram offers a few new wheel designs for 2023, but they’re not enough to salvage the ProMaster’s utility-first styling.

Powertrain

Ram offers one powertrain choice in the 2023 ProMaster. It’s a 3.5-liter V6 making 276 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD). The powertrain enables a 6,910-pound towing rating and a 4,680-pound payload capacity. The van feels reasonably powerful, but it’s not the quickest in its class, and its handling is floatier and less controlled than its rivals'.

Interior

The ProMaster’s work-first cabin offers two seats and great visibility. There’s reasonable storage in the front, and the back cargo space can be outfitted in a number of ways, depending on the owner’s needs. Ram offers packages that bring LED interior lighting, cargo netting, extra shelving, and extra seating options. Buyers can upfit the interior with storage and configuration options for specific trades, such as plumbers and electricians.

Technology

A 7-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5 comes standard. The system is a significant benefit for the van, as it’s one of the best in the business, offering crisp graphics, smooth menu transitions, and easy navigation. It also brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and more. Ram offers an upgraded 10.1-inch display, but it’s held back in the Premium Convenience Group options packages that bring other features, including wireless charging, keyless entry with push-button start, and traffic-sign recognition.

Safety

Commercial vans aren’t always the best when it comes to advanced safety tech, but Ram offers several upgrades for the ProMaster. Two safety packages are available that include features such as daytime running lights, a rear parking sensor system, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts.

Pricing

The 2023 Ram ProMaster starts at around $44,000, and it can climb to more than $50,000. Just as it does with its trucks, Ram offers the van in different classes that range from 1500 to 3500, with each step up bringing more capability and a higher price.
