What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, frame condition, and signs of prior repair. Because this truck is often used for work and weekend hauling, pay close attention to wear in the bed, suspension, and interior controls.

Focus on whether the truck’s equipment matches your needs, especially if you want more than the basics. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition and maintenance history matter as much as trim level.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base trim comes with LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port, while the LT adds power mirrors, an additional USB port, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. The Z71 adds a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 200-horsepower inline 4-cylinder, a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V6, or a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel with 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The diesel delivers the best fuel economy, including 22 mpg city/31 highway/25 combined with rear-wheel drive and 20/29/23 with 4WD.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes dual-stage front impact and side impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera. Available features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror includes an inset wide-angle mirror to help reduce the left blind spot.
• Infotainment: MyLink uses a 4.2-inch color screen in base form, while other models get an 8-inch touchscreen. It supports Apple CarPlay, voice control, and navigation prompts on the digital trip screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel gets 22 mpg city/31 highway/25 combined with rear-wheel drive and 20/29/23 with 4WD. The V6 with 4WD returns 17/24/20.

Which 2016 Chevrolet Colorado trim should I buy?

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, WT, LT, and Z71.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the simplest way into the Colorado, and it still gives you LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the truck and can live without the extra convenience features.
• WT: The WT sits above the Base and is the work-focused choice if you want a straightforward truck without moving up to the more feature-rich trims. It’s the trim to consider if utility matters more than extras.
• LT: The LT adds power mirrors, an additional USB port in the center console, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. This is the best-value trim for many buyers because it adds useful everyday convenience without pushing you into the pricier Z71.
• Z71: The Z71 is the most truck-oriented trim, with a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start. It’s the right pick if you want the most capability-focused setup and are willing to pay for it.

The safety content also notes that lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert are available, so check whether the specific trim and listing you’re considering includes those features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,452 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.20% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,872, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado's resale value?

The current average of $16,958 sits slightly below last year's $17,888.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a well-equipped, well-kept example, you may have a better chance of holding value than if you overpay for a higher-mileage truck with limited equipment.

Demand should remain supported by the Colorado’s midsize size, available diesel power, and practical everyday usability. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado safe?

The Colorado earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes with dual-stage front impact and side impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera, and it also offers lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert. The driver’s-side mirror includes an inset wide-angle mirror to help reduce the left blind spot, which is a useful everyday safety touch.

A key caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are available rather than standard, so you’ll want to confirm the exact equipment on any used listing you’re considering. That matters especially if you want the most complete safety package.

Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a diesel option that broadens the truck’s appeal and efficiency.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,849, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $16,958 average.
• It returns after a hiatus with modern styling, safety, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around shopping case, the 2016 is the better target because pricing has eased and the truck still offers broad appeal. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 can make sense, especially if you find a clean example with the features you want.
